10 Years Ubuntu
This week it’s time to congratulate one of our biggest friends in the Linux family – Ubuntu. Used by elementary OS as the base system since 2011.
Back in October 2004 the first version of Ubuntu, called “Warty Warthog” (4.10), launched and promised to deliver a much simpler and more user-oriented Linux and Desktop experience for everybody. In its history it developed very well and got even more, as you may know. Additional projects like Kubuntu or Edubuntu started with a different focus and user base to create. Even the highly popular Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu. Today, there are numerous Ubuntu based distributions, there are even mobile and convergence plans for the future. Yesterday the new version “Utopic Unicorn” (14.10) launched.
But the Linux distribution got also critics in the past. As the developers of Ubuntu decided to integrate their own desktop environment (DE) “Unity” into the system back in 2011, many users were disappointed by that change. A new project, Ubuntu MATE, promises to bring back the classic feeling for these users.
elementary developers decided to base their system on Ubuntu because of the LTS version, which releases biannually and comes with update and kernel support for 5 years.
Thank you, Ubuntu, for the great time and relationship!
Possible new wallpapers revealed
Last Saturday Daniel Foré presented some possible new wallpapers for the next version of our favourite operating system to the Google+ audience with a simple public Dropbox folder. These wallpapers are the first public tries by the developers to find new standard pictures for the next generation of elementary OS – and wallpapers are pretty important for the finalization of an elementary version and highly demanded by the community. In their general design philosophy the wallpaper is the center of every interaction with your system. It welcomes you when you log into your account, you see it while you’re working and it is the identifier of your computing personality.
In the comments to the post he also mentioned a probable election for the best pictures to be voted by the whole community, like they did for Luna some time ago.
Everybody’s still very excited for more news on that topic, but the main priority is to get as many bugs fixed as possible at the moment and by the way, the next beta is already very close.
Tip of the week – Change Account picture
Today’s tip is pretty useful for PCs with more than one user. In elementary OS it is possible to set account pictures for each user. That’s pretty handy to distinguish all user accounts easily, especially when there are also children registered on your computer. All you need to do is to visit the “User Accounts” panel in the System Settings (Switchboard). There you can click on the shadowed picture next to the name and choose either a given thumbnail or select an own one if you want.
Check out the other posts and feel free to share!
Would it be possible to get Disqus comments please? They email me of replies to my comments & are pretty globally accepted across Linux blogs. I think they even sync the comments with your WordPress installation incase you ever want to discontinue using Disqus.
I think it would improve your traffic & SEO, also do you post these to the Google Plus ElementaryOS community page? You should 🙂 .02, Keep em coming 🙂
Thank you for your feedback!
We will consider talking about the commenting system. You can follow me on Google+ if you want.
Clicking on your Google+ link says “address invalid”
Well, that’s the right link and it also works for me … Maybe it’s a problem with your browser? I’ll fix it if there are any problems in the future.
But thank you though – the Twitter link was invalid (and maybe you meant it?). It’s fixed now.
